In My Place
Lyrics: Danny Robas
Music, arrangements, production, mix and Mastering: Matti Caspi

Song review by Yossi Hersonski (original article):

The song, written by Danny Robas and composed and produced by Matti Caspi (shortly before the discovery of his illness), is a lyrical and delicate piece. It speaks about a deeply intimate emotional coping mechanism with a world that has become “crowded,” “stifling,” or hard to process. This is a state that requires retreating inward, into a safe place within the soul, expressing a longing for a protected, peaceful inner space—a space of imagination, privacy, and freedom. From the very first lines (“A quiet shore, golden sand / and the sea is mine / and I am barefoot / in my place”), it is clear that this is a journey into an inner world—the “quiet shore” symbolizing release, simplicity, and calm. Adi Cohen describes a deeply personal place, detached from the external world. “In imagination there are no boundaries / the choice is mine” — a line that is key to understanding the entire song. The inner world (imagination) offers complete freedom, in contrast to reality, which can at times feel suffocating, pressing, and burdensome. Whenever reality becomes too difficult, she chooses to “escape” into imagination. This inner place is not fixed—it may be “a desert or a field / a dim forest.” It is a shifting emotional landscape, reflecting her needs in any given moment—sometimes for light and openness, sometimes for shade and concealment. Adi raises questions about the relationship between a person and the world, between physical reality and emotional reality, suggesting that imagination is not an escape, but rather a profound means of psychological survival. Matti Caspi, one of Israel’s most prominent and refined composers, creates here a delicate, intimate, and personal melody that bears his signature: a simple, touching, slightly contemplative tune; a relatively slow tempo, almost like the rhythm of breathing; and soft yet unpredictable harmony. The melody does not burst forth or seek to impress—it is transparent and serves the text. The harmonic transitions symbolize emotional escape: the melody seems to “wander” between chords, evoking a movement toward another, freer place. Adi Cohen performs the song with a warm, clear, and emotionally rich voice—yet not overly dramatic. There is a restraint in her delivery that serves the song’s persona—she does not “shout” the pain, but sings it gently, מתוך a desire to preserve inner quiet. The performance is almost meditative. She does not try to shake the listener, but rather to draw them inward, singing in a way that conveys: I am making space for air, for freedom. When the more difficult lines arrive (such as “when it presses, when it weighs down”), she slightly tightens her voice to convey a sense of distress.
